The next Generation Porsche Diagnostic Tester

 

The history of Porsche diagnostic testers basically all started with the Bosch D-Jetronic fuel injection system tester for the 914 in the early 70’s. Then we received the 9268 digital output fault code reader in 1987 which would present the technician with an actual fault code number. The retrieved fault code corresponded to different conditions or problems recorded by the cars on board computer. The 9268 was intended to interface with the newly designed 16 valve 944S and 928 S4. This was eventually replaced by the 9288 nicknamed the Bosch Hammer because it was in the shape of a hammer, codenamed the PST-1 (Porsche Systems Tester-1) computerized diagnostic tester, circa 1989. The 9288 was mainly designed to interface with the 1989-on 964’s (911) and had to be capable of performing a “system adaptation” which was to reset all the controllers, much like a computer reboot. Later this procedure became known as a “vehicle handover”.

Following the 9288 Hammer, Porsche Piwis 3 software completely changed their approach of the system tester hardware to the Microsoft based tablet called the PST-2 for the 993’s (911’s) in 1994. The PST-2 was much more advanced than all previous testers because it had to be capable of diagnosing the soon to come OBD-II (On Board Diagnostics-II) engine management system. OBD-II was federally mandated in the U.S. as the standard by which all cars operated with starting in 1996.

In 2004 Porsche released a newer and revised touch screen version of the Microsoft based tablet. This version was called the Porsche Integrated Workshop Information System (whew) or better known as the PIWIS-I (Codenamed the PST-3). The PIWIS-I was very similar to the older PST-2 but could handle the extreme electronic data interfacing necessary in the 987, 997 and the Cayenne (9PA) truck.

Now in an unprecedented move, Porsche has just recently announced in a press release to Independent Repair Facilities (IRF’s) stating that as of December 31, 2011 at midnight, the PIWIS-I testers that were previously purchased will cease to operate. This leaves everyone who purchased a PIWIS-I no choice but to purchase the new systems tester named the PIWIS-II (Codenamed PST-4). The new PIWIS-II is also Microsoft based but this time it is literally installed on a Panasonic CF-30 “Tough Book” touch screen laptop computer. Included in the package is a VCI (Vehicle Communications Interface) module, all the necessary data cables, connectors and a standard (hefty) annual maintenance fee. This new tester is the only communications device allowed to shake hands with the new 2010 Panamera (970) and Cayenne’s (92A). Most likely this will also be the situation with the new 991 (911) model set to be released soon.

As the cars have become more electronically sophisticated, the need to interface with them and download the enormous volumes of data has required the diagnostic equipment to be just as complex. Many of the vehicle’s electronic systems require handshakes from other, seemingly unrelated, systems throughout the car to properly operate. These convoluted interfaces can yield unexpected failure scenarios; e.g., a fuel delivery issue being caused by a component failure in the airbag system. Therefore, only with these tools, equipment and information can the technician then properly diagnose the issues with the automobile.

Today, models like the 970 Panamera do not have an engine oil dipstick; the instrument cluster displays the engine oil level information. Despite that fact, you cannot even check the engine oil level immediately after an oil change without utilizing the correct diagnostic tester. Once the front hood has been opened, the instrument cluster will not display the engine oil level until the car has been driven for 6 miles.

At the end of the day the cost to repair your Porsche will go up. Regardless of who does the work, the price of the tools and the software has become very significant. Porsche, like all automobile manufactures, has reached a level of electronic sophistication that will make your head spin. Preparing to use the CAT Communication Adapter 3 Toolkit
1. Prepare your PC, and connect CAT Comm Adapter 3 to Diagnostic Port/Connector to the ECM.
2. Click “Start” – “All Programs” – “Caterpillar Comm Adapter 3” – “Comm Adapter 3 Toolkit”, or through shortcut “Comm Adapter 3 Toolkit” on desktop.

3. Once CA3 was detected, close the CAT Communication Adapter 3 Toolkit and open the CAT ET Software.
-The Connection message box is displayed while the service tool attempts to establish communications with the data link.

-To cancel all attempts to communicate with the ECM, click the “Stop Connect” button on the Connection message box. All functions that require an active data link connection are disabled. The service tool displays a blank main screen. The status bar is updated with the message “Disconnected.”

4. When communications are successfully established and a single ECM is found, the “ECM Summary” screen displays. When communications are successfully established and multiple ECMs are found, the ECM Selector dialog box displays. If the service tool connects to an ECM that is not supported by the subscription, the service tool displays a message and immediately disconnects.

5. If any problems while trying to Initializing communications to the ECM, it will displays “Cat Electronic Technician” message to provides information for correcting the problems as example below.

This is for those with a Nissan consult 3 plus interface not connected to the PC.

Usually when users power it up, only the red power led comes on and nothing more.

Suggestion from experienced users:

1: close anti-virus program & disconnect internet connecton

Anti virus program oder firewall/auto protect activ

This software may disturb/block the vi- recognitoin routine of c3+.

in my case (using a passthru device) i disconnected the internet connection, deactivated the auto protect function and after starting c3+ again, the led became green….

I think to remember , you have to connect the original vi to the car and the laptop, both. Only connection to the laptop is not enough for c3+ to recognize the original vi.

2: check usb circuit on pcb and usb sockets on pc

If you have basic knowledge of checking the pcb and components internally, check the usb circuit etc. and have a try on another laptop to eliminate faulty usb sockets on pc

3: check wires, solder breaks, etc.

Use a multimeter and check for broken wires between obd plug and pcb , check for solder breaks on pcb where plugs and connections are soldered to, basic fault finding, check for pcb damage like scorch marks or discoloration and components for signs of stress or damage, use a high power magnifier.

4: check continuity

Then its a case of deeper fault finding using things like scope, function generator etc, check continuity with cable plugged into the interface in case one of the contacts is bad then follow connections as far as you can on pcb to check for breaks on the board.

The user can display the status of a group of parameters (temperatures, pressures, etc.) simultaneously, view active and clear logged diagnostics, display the current configuration of an ECM and much more. The service tool works with a communication adapter to allow connection to an ECM. A graphical interface makes this software quick to learn and easy to use. A separate pull-down menu for each function enhances the “ease of use.” The version and identification of the ECM is automatically retrieved and is displayed on a summary screen when the program is started. Diagnostic tests and calibrations can also be performed.

Error When Launching Service Tool

There is a Microsoft issue with upgrading libraries during an installation involving certain versions of the C++ redistributable. After a successful service tool installation, when trying to run the service tool for the first time, one of the following errors may occasionally appear: “The entry point could not be located in api-ms-win-crt-runtime” or “The program can’t start because mfc140u.dll is missing from your computer.” If either of these messages is displayed, please let us know and we will send you to step by step troubleshooting guide. This procedure requires administrator rights.

Configuring Cat Electronic Technician to use the Communication Adapter 3

For Cat Electronic Technician to work with the Communication Adapter 3, the settings must be changed to select the Communication Adapter 3 as the Communication Interface Device:

Step 1 Start Cat Electronic Technician.

Step 2 Click the Stop Connect button when it appears.

Step 3 Select the Utilities menu.

Step 4 Choose “Preferences > Modify…”.

Step 5 Select the Communications tab.

Step 6 Select Cat Comm Adapter 3 (RP1210) and click OK.

NOTE: Because a growing number of products require multiple data link service, the “Enable Dual Datalink Service” checkbox has been pre-selected.

Servicing ECMs on more than one data link requires this check box to be enabled.

Failure to do this will result in undetected ECMs and reduced functionality.
