Durametric coding Possible with Porsche PIWIS cable

 

Durametric coding instruction:

The Coding option provides a way to back-up, restore, and change settings within supported control units. For example, you can save the settings of an old control unit you must replace and restore those settings to a new control unit. Durametric relies on internal part numbers and metrics to ensure you do not restore settings to unintended, incompatible control units.

Coding options on supported control units vary.

To backup control unit settings:
1.Select a model.
2.Select a control unit that supports coding.
3.Select Coding.
4.Review the warning statement.
5.If you acknowledge the warning statement, click I understand the risks (proceed with coding).
6.On the Backup / Restore tab, click the Backup button.
The Save As dialog appears. The program uses an XML file to save the backup settings. By default,
the program names the file the same as the selected control unit and saves the file to the My Documents (or Documents) folder.
7.Save the XML. Note the save location and filename for future reference.

To restore saved control unit settings:
1.Select a model.
2.Select a control unit that supports coding.
3.Select Coding.
4.Review the warning statement.
5.If you acknowledge the warning statement, click I understand the risks (proceed with coding).
6.On the Backup / Restore tab, click the Restore button. The Open dialog appears.
7.Browse to the location of your backup files.
8.Select an applicable backup file.
9.Click the Open button. The program then restores the settings to the control unit.

To edit control unit settings:
1.Select a model.
2.Select a control unit that supports coding.
3.Select Coding.
4.Review the warning statement.

To do coding with Piwis cable:
Coding is available in the Professional kits or Porsche Tester Piwis III:

In the Coding/Adaptation function group, it is possible to read the coding of control units and also to change the coding if the user has the corresponding permissions.

If you have selected at least one control unit in another function group (A), you can access the list of coding modes (B) by selecting the Coding/Adaptation function group.

You can access the different working screens after selection of a coding mode:

If you have selected manual coding without MCR (C) and confirmed this with <F12> (H), you can now set and write coding values (I). You can return to the list of coding modes with <F11> (G).

If you have selected manual coding with MCR (D) and confirmed this with <F12> (K),you must enter the vehicle data in the screen that is then displayed (L). You can return from here to the list of coding modes with <F11> (J).

When you have entered the vehicle data, you can access a screen for assignment of the valid equipment features by pressing <F12> (N). If you press the <F11> button (M) in this screen, you return to the vehicle data input screen.

After you have assigned the equipment features, you then access a screen where you confirm that the vehicle data is correct by pressing <F12> (O). If you press the <F11> button (P) in the confirmation screen, you return to the screen in which you have to assign the valid equipment features.

If you confirm that the data is correct with <F12> (Q), the codings are then written (R).

If you have selected one of the automatic coding modes (Automatic coding with MCR or Reset to factory settings) and confirmed this with <F12> (T), you must confirm the vehicle data with <F12> (Q) (back to list of coding modes with <F11> (S)). The codings are then written (R).

In addition, you can also call up a different function group by selecting one of the function group buttons in the menu bar (U).

Register & Download X-431 PAD V Diagnostic Software

 

This article is show you how to register & download X-431 PAD V Diagnostic Software.

On the home screen, tap the application icon to launch it, and then tap
“Login” to enter the login interface of diagnosis software.

(If you are a new user, follow A to proceed.)
(If you have registered to be a member, go to B to login the system directly.)
(In case you forgot password, refer to C to reset a new password.)
A. If you are a new user, tap “New Registration” to enter registration page.

In Fig. 2, fill in the information in each fi eld (Items with * must be filled). After inputting, tap “Register”, a screen similar to the following will appear:

In Fig. 3, input the Serial Number and Activation Code, which can be found in the password envelope.

*Note: To exit and activate it later, tap “Skip”. In this case, you can activate your connector by tapping “Activate VCI” under the “User Info” tab.

To download the diagnostic software, tap “Yes” to enter the download page. Tap “No” to download and install it later.
On download page, tap “Update” to start downloading. To pause downloading, tap “Stop”. To resume it, tap “Continue”. Once download is complete, the system will install the software package automatically.

*Notes:
•In process of download, please make sure the tablet has a strong Wi-Fi signal. It may take several minutes to finish it, please be patient to wait.
•To use the AutoDetect (VINScan) function, you have to download the corresponding diagnostic software and AutoSearch file.

B.If you have registered to be a member, input your name and password, and then tap the “Login” button to enter the main menu screen directly.

*Note: The tablet has an auto-save function. Once the username and password are correctly entered, the system will automatically store it. Next time you login the system, you will not be asked to input the account manually.

C.If you forgot the password, tap “Retrieve password” and then follow on-screen instructions to set a new password.

Vehicle Menu Layout

After downloading the diagnostic software, you can go to “Local Diagnose” to check if all software are completely downloaded and installed.
Tap “Local Diagnosis”, a screen similar to the following figure appears:

1. VINScan button: Tap it to scan the Vehicle Identification Number (VIN) code of your vehicle. OBD VIN and INPUT VIN are included. This function does not apply to the commercial vehicles.
*Note: Before using this function, the corresponding diagnostic software and Auto search file need to be downloaded on your tool first while downloading the diagnostic software.
2. All Tab: Displays all the vehicle makes in the vehicle menu.
3. Common Tab: Displays all frequently-used vehicle makes.

4. Regional buttons: Tap different buttons to switch to corresponding vehicles.

5. HD: If you have purchased a Gasoline & Diesel Version and activated it, this tab will appear.

6. History Button: Generally once a vehicle diagnosis is performed, the tablet will record the every details of diagnostic process. This function provides a quick access to the previously tested vehicles. Testing can be resumed from the previous operation without starting from scratch.

7. Store: Allows you to renew the subscription of diagnostic software and check the order status.

8. Search bar: Input the desired vehicle model to quickly locate it.

Diagnostics toolbar

The diagnostics toolbar contains a number of buttons that allow you to print the displayed data or make other controls. It is displayed on the upper right corner of the screen and goes through the whole diagnostic session. Why you need one piwis III instead of piwis II?

 

For the newest Porsche model after 2017 year (i.e 2018 Macan), requires piwis tester 3;

For the older Porsche model (i.e a 99 Boxster), don’t need the newest version, then piwis 2 is okay.
Question: As I’m researching this myself, given that you don’t have a model year that requires it, what is driving you to upgrade from piwis II, to piwis III? Is it just this: “The PIWIS III tester has a built in multimeter and oscilloscope and the cables are included.”, or other factors that you can note here, for reference?

I also have a 2018 Macan that requires the piwis3. I hope to help people in my community and I also plan to rebuild another. I’m excited my PIWIS III arrives tomorrow. I will review after I test it out. I have PSM module arriving Saturday that will need the module replacement procedure.

An interesting thing happened to me the other day. I had just received my PIWIS III and was going to use it to change out the PSM module and before I did I had it run a full diagnostic. At the time I didn’t realize that the unit was in development mode. My PIWIS 2 would only show one code, a faulty recirculation servomotor which I have struggled to physically change due to its location. When the diagnostic was complete two things happened; one I realized it was in development mode since all the responses were in German (in development mode the menus can be changed to English but the responses from the modules appear in German) And two there were more error codes. After having Google translate the German responses I discover that the b piller servomotors were mechanically jammed. It also found a fault in the brake light switch which was working properly. I switched the unit to after sales mode( the dealer mode) and those codes weren’t there Then I used the unit to monitor the servomotors in question. What I discovered was that they were indeed not moving from 0 to 100. After finally figuring out where they were located (under the front seats) I pulled one out and took it apart and the motor shaft was seized. Un seizing it didn’t do enough to fix it so I ordered 3(one for the recirc).

Anyways the point is that developers mode not only tested the motors it tried to run them from stop to stop which normal mode does not. The brake light switch after checking the voltage while pressing on the switch was showing only 7 volts so it was partially shorted something else missed by the regular mode. If you have mysterious issues with no codes and have access to Porsche tester, try running it in development or engineering mode as it is sometimes called, and see if it reveals any new codes.

Question:

Do you know if it is possible to activate the rear DRL and the LED Matrix headlamps with the PIWIS III?

Answer:

activation codes are not included with the tester. You can add them if you have them but this is an online programming function and the dealer must pay Porsche for the options that he installed. When he sends a work order to Porsche he receives the activation codes then enters them into the PIWIS. Now there are some Russians who have hacked porches codes and will sell you an activation code for new options. I haven’t tried them but I did pay $125 for my original activation codes so I code reprogram a pcm and a new clock spring.

Question: PIWIS III clone or original, which one should i buy?

Answer:

I recall now that I encountered a Chinese PIWIS at a local “indy” shop. I had my Turbo in there in Sep. of 2019 to get new O2 sensors installed and the tech — recently from the local Porsche dealer I use — was there and after the sensors were replaced he grabbed what looked like a PIWIS but when I expressed surprise that an indy shop would own one he told me it wasn’t the real thing but a Chinese clone. He said it worked pretty good.

Question:

PIWIS Chinese knock-off is way too expensive for me and offers no online updates. Is it true?

Configuring Cat Electronic Technician to use the Communication Adapter 3

For Cat Electronic Technician to work with the Communication Adapter 3, the settings must be changed to select the Communication Adapter 3 as the Communication Interface Device:

Step 1 Start Cat Electronic Technician.

Step 2 Click the Stop Connect button when it appears.

Step 3 Select the Utilities menu.

Step 4 Choose “Preferences > Modify…”.

Step 5 Select the Communications tab.

Step 6 Select Cat Comm Adapter 3 (RP1210) and click OK.

NOTE: Because a growing number of products require multiple data link service, the “Enable Dual Datalink Service” checkbox has been pre-selected.

Servicing ECMs on more than one data link requires this check box to be enabled.

Failure to do this will result in undetected ECMs and reduced functionality.
